Pollutions - What Can We Do About It?

Michael C
I am concerned for our children's future and I am sure you are too. We are using up limited un-renewable resources produced by the earth and at the same time we are polluting and damaging the earth which feeding and sustaining us as a life form. When the earth's population is small, the earth has a capacity to renew itself but now there are more than six billion humans to feed and sustain, and the earth is not getting any bigger to accommodate all of human being's voracious consumption.

At the rate we are going, something has to give, it is either human or the earth. Of course we do not want to be in the endangered species list so we must do something before it is too late. All of us can do something. I found a list of educational information about pollution and I have selected some of the most common ones and edited them to place them here below. The most common pollutants

CARBON DIOXIDE (CO2): CO2 is the main greenhouse gas.

CAR: There are hundreds of millions of cars that produce CO2 and lots of other pollution.

CIGARETTE: harms smokers and people around them because of the carcinogen in the smoke.

COAL: It is the filthiest fossil fuel. Burning coal releases smoke and CO2

COW: They fart and belch a lot, releasing methane.

LANDFILL: where garbage gets dumped, Landfills produce a lot of methane.

METHANE: also called 'natural gas'. It is burn to produce heat for cooking and to power electricity generating stations. Methane, comes from underground like oil, is a powerful greenhouse gas.

OIL: a fossil fuel. Some power stations and almost all transport depend totally on oil. Burning oil produces CO2 and other poisonous fumes

PLASTIC: useful for all kinds of purposes. Burning plastic can cause serious pollution. Not easily degradable, so most ends up in landfills or in the sea

SMOKE: pollution which comes out of chimneys (e.g. from coal-burning) and exhaust pipes. Smoke also comes from burning forests, to clear land for farmingStart now with plastic bags

Being aware is the beginning of an education process. We must teach our children and be an example to them in how to help reduce pollution. Sure, we cannot stop driving a car as it is essential for modern living. But we can contribute our part in helping recycling and reducing consumption of harmful products and reuse some of the things rather than throw them away. Let us start with plastic bags.

If at all possible, try not to take the plastic carrier bags from the supermarkets. Avoid food in prepackaged plastic. Buy your fresh food and vegetable un-packaged and bring along your own bags which can be reused many times. If things can be recycled, which most palstics can, throw them into recycle bins for recycling. Separate your garbage into different types for recycling.

Plastic bags are one of the main pollutant of the 21st century. Consider the following shocking facts about plastic shopping bags:

  • Four to five trillion plastic bags are manufactured each year
  • Of those 100 trillion plastic bags, 1% are recycled
  • It takes 1000 years for polyethylene bags to break down
  • As polyethylene breaks down, toxic substances leach into the soil and enter the food chain
  • Approximately 1 billion seabirds and mammals die per year by ingesting plastic bags
  • Plastic bag choke landfills

The message is reduce, reuse and recycle.Everything we use in our homes, office, schools, organizations, churches, we can have a look at how we use and dispose of things. If it can be reused or recycle, we can make an effort to do it. If we can reduce the usage, it will not only save us money, it will help save the world as well.
