7 Things You Need to Know If You Want to Be a Political Junkie

Lindsey Russell
There are 7 things that all political junkies should know. How do you stand up? It is never too late to become a political junkie when you take theses tips and tricks into account.

Political Junkie Tip #1 - Know your key international players.

The more complex the political world becomes, the more politics in the United States will be driven by events internationally. In order to be a political junkie in this day and age, you will have to know more than just the leaders of Iran, Venezuela, and North Korea. You should know what is going on both fronts of the current war, as well as have a grasp on the complex situation between Israel and Lebanon. For example, the Israeli and Lebanese war this past summer is seen by some as a proxy war between the United States and Iran. Things aren't much better, and intentions are increasing again.

Political Junkie Tip #2 - Study the key and subtle differences between different factions of the major political parities.

There are a lot of complex differences not only between the two major political parties in the United States, Democrats and Republicans, but there are many factions that make up both parties. For example, there are some Republicans who are more concerned with reducing government spending and taxation rather than some of the social issues that divide Democrats and Republicans. In addition, there are some Democrats who firmly stand behind national security, although today they are few and far between, while there are other factions of the Democratic Party that want to avoid war at any cost.

Political Junkie Tip #3 - Fully realize that most people don't fit the superficial molds of Democrat and Republican.

Once you realize that the major political parties aren't quit as homogenous as portrayed by the mainstream media, you will then notice an even greater spectrum of political thought when you discuss various political issues. It is said that one should never discuss sex, religion, or politics in polite society. There is one simple reason for those three items being grouped together. They are all intensely personal. No two people are going to have the exact same view on the subject.

Political Junkie Tip #4 - Learn the idiosyncrasies of major political players.

If you study the vast array of political figures in the United States, you will soon realize just how strange our political system is. Just as in real life, politicians have idiosyncrasies that make them stand out, unique. Think of people like Ted Kennedy, Strom Thurmond, Hillary Clinton, and Newt Gingrich. It is debatable if you could gather a more eclectic group of people.

Political Junkie Tip #5 - Keep up on the latest political blogs and TV shows.

There are cutting edge political blogs and TV shows (some that specialize in political satire) created everyday. If you are to become a true political junkie, you will want to know where to go for the latest, most up to date information or satire.

Political Junkie Tip #6 - Meet other political junkies on-line.

Most political junkies love to debate with and meet other political junkies. It is easier than ever to do so on-line. All you have to do is comment on a few choice blogs, and you are set.

Political Junkie Tip #7 - Know on how to get involved, and then go ahead, do it.

At some point, you will want to get involved in a campaign or a specific cause. If you are a true political junkie, you will soon learn how to begin getting involved, and will then do so.

If you are serious about becoming a hard-core political junkie, these 7 tip and tricks provide you with a good place to start. There is much more to becoming a political junkie than meets the eye. Beware, you might just find yourself with a head full of useless political knowledge.

I agree. There needs to be balance.

First, no knowledge is truly useless if you can turn it into an article! This is a great article that has clearly been overlooked. I wish I could find good both-sides-represented political blogs that would allow me to learn about the liberal pov without me getting attacked as soon as I ask a hard (but not leading or slanted) question. I could probably say the same about conservative blogs, but I'm not really sure as I agree with them most of the time.
