Polyester

Wikipedia sources say: "Polyester" is a 1981 American John Water comedy film starting Devine, Tab Hunter, Edith Massey, and Mink Stole...According to Wikipedia: "Odorama" is a method in which viewers can smell what they see on the screen through "scratch and sniff" cards; Polyester is one of the few films with "Odorama," after Polyester; Odorama became too cliché and tacky to appeal to most viewers.

I choose Polyester because it's one of the great cult-films of all times.

Unless it makes fun of groups of peoples, eras, or fashion-it can't be a John Waters film. Polyester is all of the above and then some. John Waters makes fun of just about everything under the sun; divorce, abortion, foot fetish, and alcoholism are just amongst a few things which Waters parodies in Polyester.

The story tells of Francine Fishpaw (Divine), a typical suburban housewife married to a man (David Samson) who owns a porno-theater. As a result, Francine has to deal with Christian groups who want her husband's business shut down. They constantly accost her in her home, and make her life a living hell.

Francine weighs in he vicinity of 350 pounds, so people order pizzas and have them deliver to her home as pranks, etc.

Francine's only friend is Cuddles (Edith Massey), Cuddles has inherited a large sum of money from a family she used to work (housekeeper) for. Cuddles and Francine are great friends.

Francine's daughter (Mary Garlington ) is spoiled rotten as can be; Francine's son (Ken King) suffers from foot fetish, and he also sniffs glue; Francine's mother (Jonie Ruth White) is a cocaine addict, etc., etc.

One of the groundbreaking moments in the movie is when Tab Hunter kisses Francine. There weren't too many films back then which contained a love scene between a heterosexual man and a transvestite (Devine). Of course, Todd (Tab Hunter) eventually turns on Francine and plots with her mother to take away her divorce settlement money, but the plan backfires on them. At the end, Francine is spared with her two children who have both mended their ways....
