Kids Christmas Tree Craft

If you are tired of crafts that require intricate cutting and pasting, but want to provide an attractive craft that the little hands in your classroom can actually do on their own-this project is for you. With a handful of pom poms, some glue and a Christmas tree base your class can make these cute Christmas tree crafts with very little help from you.

Supplies: (per student)

20-30 medium pom poms (green)

10 large pom poms (green)

10-15 miniature pom poms (colored)

1 medium yellow pom pom

2 medium brown pom poms

5-inch square of green construction paper/foam board/index paper

White glue

Cut Out the Christmas Tree base

Cut a triangular tree shape from the construction paper. Older children can cut their own, but if you choose to have young students do the cutting, draw lines for them to follow. You may choose to simply cut the shapes out ahead of time, but it does provide practice with cutting and develops fine motor skills.

Spread the Glue

Spread white glue over the tree shape. Again, you may wish to do this for younger students to avoid a bit of the mess-but older students can handle this task on their own. Allow glue to set until it begins to get tacky to avoid a slippery surface.

Demonstrate the Procedure

Begin by showing your class how to position the yellow pom pom at the very tip of the triangle. This is the star to the tree and should be placed firmly in place before moving on.

Gluing the Pom Poms

Instruct students to glue the green pom poms on the tree so that all areas are covered. Using medium and large pom poms in several shades of green creates texture and depth to the final project.

Decorating the Tree

Once the area is covered, its time to decorate the tree with miniature colored pom poms. Young children benefit from seeing a completed tree to guide them in placing the pom poms-but there is no right and wrong way to place the decorations.

Adding the Trunk

Add the two brown pom poms to the base, placed side-to-side as the trunk of the tree. Allow to dry completely and use to decorate the bulletin board, border the windows or display outside your classroom door.

Displaying Student Art Work

Many children enjoy creating a village of Christmas trees as part of a bulletin board display. Add people, animals and a small cottage. Finish off with cotton ball snow by gluing cotton balls around the bases of trees.
