Pomegranate Pills Cheaper Than Juice

Joel Hirschhorn
A really impressive amount of medical research has provided compelling evidence of multiple health benefits from pomegranate juice. Nearly all this research has been sponsored by the major commercial source, POM Wonderful 100% Juice that is widely available and is refrigerated. You probably have seen the odd shaped bottles in grocery stores. This juice is pretty expensive and tastes somewhat better than lower cost alternatives, which are non-refrigerated bottles.

Now there are POMx pills, with each one equivalent to eight ounces of the POM juice. I have found the lowest cost source of the POM juice to be at Costco, at $10 for a large 60 ounce bottle. This is very much cheaper than the smaller size bottles in regular grocery stores. A special promotion from the company now makes the pills available for $30 per month, with the first month free and with no shipping charges. This turns out to be even cheaper than the large bottle from Costco, assuming consumption of eight ounces per day. It should be noted that some studies have found that a large fraction of pomegranate supplement pills in fact do not contain real concentrate of the juice, which is why the POMx pills merit serious consideration.

One study found that only 6 of 19 pomegranate supplements tested had compositions resembling that of pomegranates. Thirteen had little or no detectable pomegranate-derived components. Another study of 27 pomegranate supplements found that only 5 had a typical pomegranate profile. Seventeen supplements contained little or no pomegranate and the remaining 5 had no detectable pomegranate.

POMx has been found to be the most similar to natural pomegranates and has the highest antioxidant capacity. One advantage of the pills is that you avoid the calories from consuming the juice while getting the same health benefits.

As to the medical research, there is simply no question that authentic pomegranate juice contributes to cardiovascular health. It works to prevent plaque buildup in arteries, increases blood flow to the heart, and helps lower blood pressure, for example.

There is also considerable research showing that pomegranate juice promotes a healthy prostate and works to prevent prostate cancer and even reduce the severity of prostate cancer.
