Hall of Heroes in Ponca City, Oklahoma is one of many comic book shops that plan to celebrate the 10th Annual National Free Comic Book Day on Saturday, May 7.

Free Comic Book Day is a single day , the first Saturday in May, when participating comic book shops across North America and around the world give away comic books free to anyone who comes into their stores.

Free Comic Book Day is administered by a panel representing all parts of the comic book industry: retailers, publishers, suppliers, and Diamond Comic Distributors.

Each year, publishers apply to provide comic books at cost to retailers, who in turn give them away for free.

Several newly released titles will be available.

Comic books are an original American art form, created in the early days of the twentieth century. They are fun to read, featuring a wide range of diverse story lines that capture the imagination of the readers.

Hall of Heroes is located at 119 East Grand Avenue, and will be open that day from noon to 7p.m.

In conjunction with Free Comic Book Day, the shop is celebrating it's anniversary and will be giving away a free hot dog and a free pack of sportscards to first 100 people attending the event.

Every item in the store will be on sale up to 50 percent off.

Drawings will also be held for movie passes from Carmike North Park 4, a local movie theater, and items from other local merchants.

For more information on the events and the store contact owner Dave Guinn at 580-765-7437.

So refreshing to see that comic books are still being promoted. I know they're still being sold; even new ones, but read that in general they aren't being read much anymore by new, younger readers. Yet there are so many movies around about comic book heroes (I love them!). And now they're talking about three and four-year-olds being adept on devices that have apps. Scary, because kids in general aren't using their imaginations much anymore, aren't going out to play--unless it's for organized sports. And they don't seem to read as much, or even have someone read to them.

I would love this one! I love comic books. I had all the first editions of the Marvel Comics (given to me by a much older brother in law) and a bunch of others...A full trunk full in fact. This was before they were collectibles. When I got married and didn't take them, my mother threw them out. At that time, they had no or very limited value.
