Pond Fountains Can Make Your Pond a Thing of Beauty

Turning a Old Farm Pond into a Healthy Environment for Fish

Owning a pond on your property can either be a thing of beauty or an eyesore that can detract from your property value in a hurry. Last spring, a friend of mine purchased a 15-acre property complete with a badly neglected fishing pond in a corner of the land he purchased.

Talk about a smelly mess! The pond was covered in algae and obviously had not been constructed to allow fresh water flow in or out of the pond except during a heavy rain which would force the pond to flood it's banks and spread algae into the fields around the pond.

My friend didn't know a thing about farm ponds and I am no expert, so we sought the advice of an expert in Central Ohio, Pond Fountain Pro in Sunbury, Ohio. Steve, the owner of the company met with my friend and I and accessed the problems with this pond of how to turn this mess into something my friend could take pride in at a reasonable cost.

I was curious as to how this problem could be corrected as my friend and I both enjoy fishing on a summer day and this farm pond could be a great getaway after a week of working.

Steve laid out a plan using a set of overflow piping which would allow the pond to overflow out of the pond at a reduced rate and not flood the surrounding field in such a dramatic fashion as before. The second part of this plan was to add a floating pond fountain to the center of the pond to increase the oxygen levels in the pond and eliminate the algae and the smell.

I volunteered my labor to this project and within a weekend, everything was in place. We had dug 4 overflow pipes and installed drain tiles into the surrounding field to allow the ground to absorb the extra water. We helped Steve install the pond fountain and ran the electric cable to the pond location. Once the fountain was in operation, it took about a week to notice the algae problem was beginning to come under control. Within a month, the algae growth was almost non-existent and the water had become clear without the annoying smell as before the installation.

I urge anyone with a residential or commercial pond to contact Steve at Pond Fountain Pro. They know how to deal with problem ponds and how to turn these problems into an asset on your property. Now if I can just talk my friend into stocking that pond with fish!
