History
Origin of Poodles can be traced to Germany. They were used as Water Retrievers. The records of poodles in history can be seen as old as 1st century in Southern Europe. Poodles are also popular in France. They have been used in France for truffle hunting and duck hunting.
The pictures of the dog are found in Roman coins and Egyptian carvings. References of Poodles, as old as fifteenth century B.C, have been found in France, Holland and Italy. Being used as water retrievers they had their famous "Poodle Clip" which helped reduce resistance in water. The entire hair was shaved off, leaving patches near the vital organs and joints to protect these areas.
Qualities
Poodles are highly intelligent and quick learners. They also forget slowly, hence leading to resentment of the owners. The average age of the Poodle is between 10 and 18 years. Some dogs even live up to 21 years. Though sturdy they are susceptible to large number of genetic health problems. They can be bred in any types of homes. They require a lot of exercise. The standard sized Poodles are considered the most adaptable.
The standard poodles are a versatile breed. They are good water retrievers. They are used as guide dogs by law enforcement agencies. Some standard poodles have competed in dog race like Alaskan Iditarod Sled dog race. Miniature poodles are considered child's best friend. They believe they are bigger than their actual size. They are very protective and hence you need to be careful with other dogs around. Toy Poodles are also great companions.
Poodles cannot be part time pets. They are highly intelligent and require regular and consistent assurance from their owners. They need to be well groomed; otherwise their coats become unpleasant and may lead to some health hazard for the Poodles. They are always cheerful and confident, making them great companion dogs.
The size of the dogs also varies - standard poodle is 15 inches or more in height. They weigh around 20 lbs. The Toy Poodles are less than 10 inches. They weigh less than 12 lbs. Miniature Poodles weight 10 to 15 inches in height and are between 12 to 20 lbs.
All the varieties have the same characteristic pointed skull, long, straight muzzle and egg-shaped eyes. The ears are low and hand close to the head. They have deep chests, strong necks, very powerful hind legs and straight forelegs. The tails are carried very high.
The coat or hair of the poodles is wiry and coiled; some even have smooth long hair. The coat can be neatly combed. The typical cut or clip of poodles come in two styles - continental and English saddle.
Poodles are great companion dogs. They need to be looked after very well.
