Poor at Christmas

Doug Clore
We was poor at Christmas,
Just like the whole year through.
And if you think we didn't know,
Well I'll just laugh at you.
We knew we was poor
'Cause our stomachs was sore,
Most times just empty, I guess
Livin' on love ain't
Near so much fun
As poets now seem to suggest.
I'd write better rhymes
If I been to school more
But I didn't have shoes most winters.
It's cold here up north,
And even the poor
Suffer frostbite from
Tryin' to walk through it.

You're right Doug, that cliche is all wrong. The verbal abuse being worse than physical cliche is too. A great poem to remind people to reach out to the less fortunate. You're a fine poet.

Poignant. A real Christmas involves helping those who are less fortunate. I visited one such friend recently who lives in housing for the disabled. When I left her apartment I realized that I had left my gloves and hat behind. She called a few days later and asked me if I was the one who had left them there. I said yes, but you can keep them; I have another set. She became real excited and said that she knew that God had provided them for her because she didn't have any and no money with which to buy them. This incident made her Christmas and mine. Jesus said that "it is more blessed to give than to receive." He was right. Oh by the way, I see that you are new to AC, welcome. I hope you experience much success here. Judging from this one poem, I think you are a wonderful writer. Merry Christmas.
