Poor Freddy Krueger: A Haiku Quintet

A Manmade Nightmare for Profit

David A. Reinstein, LCSW
The scourge of Elm Street
From one teen's sleep to the next.
They just don't get it.

If his nails got done
And dermabrasion was tried,
He might be nicer.

Empathy comes hard
But as a creature on Earth
He has nightmares, too.

Hollywood is cold
Like the money that it earns.
Cash is what matters.

Poor Freddy Krueger.
Both hideous and deadly,
Created to earn.

Freddy always terrified me. I really appreciate your vision on this one. For me, it also examines those things more terrifying than scary Hollywood movies. Well done!

I saw the first Nightmare movie when I was in college, on the annual horror film night for Halloween. It was actually more funny than scary, because other students would scream when people went out to the mailbox just to be silly, or make fun of the gory special effects. That's the only way I would watch something like that, though. Maybe all those Hollywood villians are really misunderstood and need a monster support group?
