Judge Sentences Socialite to 45 Days in Jail

Party girl Paris Hilton will have to put her wild ways on hold. Instead of stumbling in at 6 am after a long partying night, Hilton will be arriving for her scheduled breakfast. The blackberry and cell phone will have to stay home. How will the socialite manage her "famous for being famous" life? What on earth is changing Paris Hilton's ways? Rest assured, its not by her own choosing.

On Friday, a not quite punctual Paris Hilton had her day in court. Arriving for the hearing 15 minutes late, Paris looked prim and proper in her black and gray attire. The socialite received a sentence of 45 days in jail. Her crime? Driving with a suspended license. The 26 year old Hilton looked on in amazement as her sentence was read in the courtroom. Her parents, Rick and Kathy Hilton listened intently. Then mother, Kathy let out a gasp.

During the hearing, Hilton took the stand to plead her case. She assured the judge it was a misunderstanding. According to Hilton, her rep Elliot Mintz told her that her license was suspended for 30 days. She also claims he assured her she had continued driving privileges for work. During her testimony Hilton announced, "I never would've been driving if my license was suspended. I follow the law."

Three police officers took the stand during the hearing. Citing many of the recent Paris Hilton driving incidents, each of the three officers had pulled Hilton over three times. The first officer warned Hilton her license may be suspended. The other two officers confirmed to Hilton that the license definitely was suspended. The prosecution presented evidence the judge later called the "smoking gun." Hilton was cited with a written warning by the California Highway patrol on January 15. The warning clearly stated she was driving with a suspended license. Paris Hilton's signature was on the warning. When prosecuting attorneys stated Hilton deserved an active sentence in the closing argument, Kathy Hilton laughed.

Before her sentence was read, the celebutante stood before the judge and said, "I respect the law. I want you to know I am very sorry and I will pay complete attention to everything from now on."

Judge Michael Sauer said Hilton "didn't care and kept driving." He announced Hilton must report to the Century Regional Detention Center, Los Angeles County's jail for women by June 5. The Superior Court Judge further ruled Hilton would not be allowed to participate in any work release programs or be allowed electronic devices instead of active jail time. After the sentence was read, Kathy Hilton sarcastically requested the judges autograph.

Leaving the courthouse, Paris had no comments for the media. As the day's verbose Hilton, Kathy was not at a loss for words. Paris Hilton's angry mother vented, "This is pathetic and disgusting . . . This is a joke."

Hilton's attorney, Howard Weitzman commented, "I'm shocked and disappointed at the sentence . . .To sentence Paris Hilton to jail is uncalled for, inappropriate and ludicrous. She was singled out for who she is. She's been selectively targeted. Paris was honest in her testimony. We plan to appeal. Shame on the system."
