Pop Up TV - Are You Watching It?

Cable Channels Are for Surfing - Not for Pop Up Viewing

Tom Marino
I wonder how many viewers watch Pop Up TV. What the heck is Pop Up TV anyway? Some of you may have already guessed it, or have you? I like to surf cable channels when I practicing being a couch potato. It's often very difficult for me to locate my remote and quite frankly I sometimes wish
I didn't find it. I need to shut the boob tube off. I mean, I get so annoyed when I am watching a great show. Why? These darn pop ups disrupt the show. They are not just little ones but are rather large. Some times one third of the screen is occupied with them. Have you figured it out yet? If not, you are not a channel surfer. And that may be a good thing.

Well, let me explain. If you watch Bravo cable channel, you will see an annoying graphic pop up while the movie is in progress. Not just once but many times. The pop up is usually an ad for an up coming show and it can also be a prelude to a pending commercial. I also get so annoyed when that little TV station logo is posted on the bottom right too. These PITA graphics just ruin the movies. I know where they got this idea from, the web, yes that's it - gotta be. Pop ups get your attention! As I type this article, I am watching Bravo. Their logo is on screen with little snow flakes at the bottom. Oh...here they come again more pop ups just like the web. They are running these pop ups about once every two min or so. No I did not time them, it's just a perception.

You know what is interesting about these pop ups? Bravo never runs them when paid commercials are on. Okay, on to the next PITA. It's not just Bravo. Most cable channels are doing it. I spent sometime sending emails to them complaining about how annoying these thing are. All I ever got back was a canned response concerning how busy they are. One channel company actually said on their web site that this is their policy no matter what concerns viewers have - the pop ups and logo will remain.

One more PITA - I have blocked several cable channels. Some of their programming is so profane that the only sound your hear is beep, beep, peep. Clearly not a show worth watching, at least for some of us. Okay, you're right, I did unblock Bravo to watch a scheduled movie, I admit it. But when my grandkids are here quite a few channels are blocked. Most of the cable programming (except for my personal favorites) is simply a desperate run for ratings. It must work for them as these crappie shows are still on and somebody's watching them. Oh Oh, I just admitted I watched them, how else would I know? But not anymore. It only takes a min or so to know you're looking at junk programming. That's why you have a remote in your hand.

That's my ramblings for today.
