How Make Popcorn Christmas Tree Ornaments
Supplies needed:
Popcorn, popped and cooled.
Red, Gold or Silver Glitter
Dried fruit or buttons (Optional)
Notebook paper
Heavyweight cardboard
Heavy duty scissors or utility knife
Hole punch
Craft glue
1/4" or smaller ribbon for hanging ornament
Draw or trace a star, snowman (face and body only, no hands) or other design onto plain paper. This will be the pattern for the ornament. Draw a small rounded area at the top of the pattern for the ornament hanger. Cut the pattern out, trace it onto the heavy cardboard. Using a utility knife cut out the heavy cardboard pattern. .
Using a hole punch, punch a hole in the rounded area at the top of the pattern. This should be big enough to pass the ribbon through.
Spread craft glue over one side of the cut out pattern. For the snowman, spread the glue over one area at a time so the glue does not dry out before the popcorn is attached.
Press popcorn into the glue, making sure to fill in all glued areas with popcorn. Use smaller popcorn, or cut popcorn smaller, to fill in tight areas.
Allow the ornament to dry. Once popcorn has dried, flip the ornament over and apply glue and popcorn to the other side. Allow this to dry completely.
If making a star, spread a very thin area of glue on top of the popcorn and sprinkle glitter on top or glue. Optional: Glue dried cranberry or fruit on top of the popcorn to add more color and dimension.
For the snowman, use dried fruit or other small items such as buttons, for the eyes, ears, nose, mouth and buttons on his body.
Once the ornament is dry, cut a 3-4 inch long ribbon, loop through the punched out area at the top of the ornament. Glue the ends of the ribbon together. Lay ornament flat and wait until the ribbon is completely dry before hanging.
OPTIONAL: Use colored popcorn for the star or use colored popcorn for the snowman's eyes, nose and mouth. Use green popcorn for a Christmas tree ornament and add dried cranberries for classic Christmas colors. For a candy cane ornament, alternate red and white popcorn for the stripes on the candy cane, or use cinnamon candies or dried cranberries for the red stripes. Kids will have fun coming up with creative types of ornaments they can make out of popcorn.
