Pope John Paul II Beatification in May After Miracle Approved

The Vatican announced today that Pope John Paul II will have his beatification on May 1, 2011 after current Pope Benedict XVI signed an official decree for the event.

Beatification is the last step in the process toward canonization whereby a person becomes a saint in the Roman Catholic Church.

A miracle must be attributed to the person under consideration for sainthood in order for one to become a saint, and Pope Benedict XVI declared in his decree that Pope John Paul II cured a French nun who suffered from Parkinson's disease.

Pope John Paul II passed away in 2005 after serving as pope for nearly 27 years.
