Popular Breweries in Philadelphia

Jessica Rowe
Philadelphia has been brewing beer for hundreds of years and at one time had nearly one hundred running breweries. Today, Philadelphia is still the home to a great deal of breweries, some newer and others rather old. Here are a few of the more popular breweries in Philadelphia.

Yards Brewing Company

Friends Tom Kehoe and Jon Bovit began Yards in 1994, using a brewery no larger than a garage. Fourteen years later Yards is still around and has a much larger home of 40,000 square feet. Originally starting out with only two beer choices, yards has grown to have a nice list of Ales.

The Brawler and Philadelphia Pale Ale are Signature Ales. Love Stout and Saison are the Seasonal Ales and the Revolutionary Ales are brewed by recipes from poor Richards Tavern, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.

Yards Brewing Company is located at 901 N. Delaware Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19123. (215) 634-2600

Nodding Head Brewery and Restaurant

Nodding Head offers a full bar, flat screens for the big game, a reasonably prices restaurant, bobble head collection and a brewery. Not bad for a small place. Enjoy a Sunday brunch, an appetizer, salad, sandwich, and burger or dinner plate. Wash it down with an award winning beer such as a rare German style wheat beer known as Ich bin ein Berliner Weisse or BPA, Bill Payer Ale.

Other award winning Ales include 60 Shilling, Grog, George's Fault and HoBo Pils. More beer choices such as Harvest will be coming soon. Operating hours are Monday thru Saturday 11:30am until 2am and Sunday 11am until 5pm.

Nodding Head Brewery and Restaurant is located at 1516 Sansom St., Second floor, Philadelphia, Pa. 19102. (215) 569-9525

Great research. Have never been able to get into the taste of beer. Pina coladas, however.... (if only! I had to stop drinking years ago due to low blood sugar!)
