The first of these hackneyed, overrated car accessories is exactly the one that most often comes to mind: 'spinners'. These point less devices are infamous for being as useless as they are expensive. The concept is simple. These rotational attachments gain momentum as you drive and, upon braking, continue to spin independently. Like a lava lamp or plasma ball, they're fun to look at for a while- but this minor aesthetic value does not justify the several hundred dollar price tag.
I actually had an acquaintance in high school that bought these one at a time long before actually owning a car. The main argument against 'spinners' is that they provide no practical purpose whatsoever, yet they still manage to attract a following as a vehicular status symbol.
Another such accessory that comes to mind isn't very expensive and actually one I myself have a level of affection for. The 'foam dice' have been around for decades and have managed to survive to this day. While these dangling ornaments aren't as popular as they once were, they still have a sizeable following.
Some identify the oversized dice as being a distinguishing article of flair for one's vehicle. Others regard them as a sly implication of a love of gambling. Whatever the appeal, they honestly due no good. The larger pairs actually hinder your driving ability as they smack you in the face on bumpy roads and obscure your vision. You might be able to pick them up for around five dollars, but they're still a pointless, clichéd accessory for any 'hipster's ride'.
Custom license plates have always perplexed me. Why? Why waste money on this meager, annual status symbol? Whether it sports your nickname, images of your favorite sport, or a slightly clever pun- custom license plates are as pointless as they come. They are a waste of fifty dollars that do nothing to convey any sort of meaningful performance boost- other than to your own ego. Despite this, you constantly hear and see people with these eyesores. Another, less reputable, acquaintance of mine used to make a point of discreetly swiping custom license plates in parking lots. Foolish of her? Yes. Almost as foolish as actually getting one in the first place.
Anyone that has seen a comedy featuring Hispanics (Napoleon Dynamite for example) in a car are probably familiar with hydrolics. These air pumps, which run a couple hundred, are attached to the car's chassis to allow it to bounce up and down at random. These pointless accessories serve no purpose whatsoever. While some adore them for the fun of making their car hop and others like looking like true hipsters, they do nothing but make your car look stupid- much like hood and trunk wings. Adding injury to insult, they've been known to cause internal engine damage.
