Popular French Baby Names

Favorite Finds with Flair

Renee Shaffer
I looked extensively to find French baby names that appealed to me. I do not tend to lean to the boring side of names nor do I favor flamboyant names that make a kid wish they were never born. In my research I learned that there are tons of boring French names. I also found that I preferred the baby boy name choices over the baby girl name choices.

I hope there is something here you find appealing while you're considering your baby name choices.

FRENCH BABY NAMES FOR BOYS

1-Boden

Meaning: Messenger

This is an awesome baby boy name with French origin. What parent wouldn't be proud to call this name out to their son? It's strong; it's unique, and very masculine.

2-Boone

Meaning: Good

I think of a real little adventurer when I picture a little boy with this name. It may be French in origin but it also brings to mind the American, Daniel Boone.

3- Rainier

Meaning: Wise Warrior

I have always liked this name. I guess I noticed it being more popular among parents in the nineties but it's been around a long time. This name sounds like an important, influential name in my opinion.

4-Sylvain

Meaning: From The Forrest

This name popped off the page at me when I read it. It's not common in any of my circle of friends yet it's not too flamboyant that I wouldn't call my own child by that name.

FRENCH BABY NAMES FOR GIRLS

1-Chanel

Meaning: Pipe, Channel

This name was more commonly a French last name but many little girls were named Chanel as a first name as early as the 60's. Probably due to the popularity of Coco Chanel, world-renowned fashion and perfume icon.

2-Clairce

Meaning: Bright, Brilliant

This name sounds so wise and noble. It makes me think of someone of high intellectual capabilities. It also reminds me of the movie "Silence of The Lambs" which has a star character by the name of Clarice.

3-Moselle

Meaning: Born Of, feminine form of Moses

My dear friend's youngest daughter is named Ciara Moselle after her grandmother who also shared the middle name of Moselle. Every time I see little Ciara, I see a sweet, little sophisticated lady whose spirit matches her beautiful name.

4-Pearl

Meaning: Pearl, Gem

This name is dear to me in that it is the name of my paternal grandmother. She was just like a little tiny shining gem. It's a common, plain name but seems to say a lot for those who use the name.

5-Rochelle

Meaning: Small Rock

This name belonged to my sister. Rochelle passed away before I was ever born. To hear this name reminds me of a sweet, sweet angel, always full of joy. That's how I was told Rochelle was during her brief life here on earth. I also like the version using an "a", as in Rachelle.

6-Sylvie

Meaning: From The Forest

There is a beautiful, charming older lady that works at the pediatrician's office I used to take the kids to. Her name is Sylvie and she is just as lovely as her beautiful name. I envision a little blonde haired, blue-eyed angel when I associate this name with a new baby.

Everyone has to ponder with extreme importance just what the correct name for his or her baby should be. You'll know in your heart when you hear it but you'll hear thousands of names before you decide on the "perfect" baby name. Perhaps looking around your world, right now, someone like the lovely lady from the pediatricians office may just be the spark you need to finally make a decision as to the name of your baby. Some folks want a name based on the actual origin and original meaning of a name. Others just simply need to look around or think of someone who once meant something to them for whatever reason and they have landed the perfect baby name. Perhaps this article, while not chock full of cold hard facts and long drawn out meanings, could be an inspiration to help you look around and consider baby names one might not ordinarily think of and to look in places besides books and the internet for ideas and suggestions. Use your imagination.
