Popular Girl Dog Names for 2009

If you have a new female puppy or dog you're looking to name, here is some insight into what the most popular girl dog names will be for 2009.

No doubt, many people will name the dogs after movie characters. I predict some names will come from the movie Twilight, a big hit among teenagers. Characters you might use as girl dog names are Bella, Rosalie and Esme.

Predictably, many fans of President-elect Barack Obama may choose his kids' names for their girl dogs. No doubt Sasha and Malia would make good girl dog names -- in fact, I even named my cat Sasha eight years ago.

Over the years, the top girl dog name has been Maggie, followed closely by Molly, Lady, Sadie and Lucy, according to Dog-Answers.com. The American Kennel Club also compiles a list of the top girl dog names, and atop the list there were Lady, Bella, Princess, May and Rose.

Finally, with the economic recession feeding a general depression, I predict a higher percentage of alcohol consumption out there, which may lead to more girl dog names based on adult beverages! Of these, some of my favorite girl dog names are Chablis, Margarita, Bacardi and, for a pair of females, Pinot & Grigio.

If none of these strike your fancy, be sure to check out this dog names database! Happy naming!
