A police dog is a dog which is specifically trained in order to assist police officers and other law-enforcement personnel in their work. Police dogs are often referred to as K-9. There are many breeds of dogs that are trained and used on Police Forces. The most popular is the German Shepherd but there are many other breeds of Police dogs and each one has their own specific duty.

Besides being an attack dog to apprehend criminals and protect the officer who handles the dog, there are many different roles that Police Dogs are used for:

Public Order Enforcement Dog

The image of a police dog is one used to enforce public order by chasing the criminal by using the method known as Bark and Hold. German Shepherd Dogs and Belgian Malinois are most commonly used because of their easy availability, but there are several other breeds who have have been trained to be a police dog: Dutch Shepherds, Rottweilers, Boxers, Doberman Pinschers, Giant Schnauzers, American Pit Bull Terriers, and American Staffordshire Terriers.

Search and rescue dog

Bloodhounds are often used for this task to locate suspects or find missing persons and or objects.

Detection dog

Some dogs are used to detect illegal substances such as drugs or explosives which can be carried by a person or placed somewhere on the person. In many countries, Beagles are used in airports to sniff the baggage for items that are not permitted.

Cadaver dogs

Some dogs are trained to detect odors from decoposing bodies. The dog's noses are very sensitive, and they can detect bodies that are under running water.

Other countries in central Europe that use Police Dogs are: Belgiam, The Netherlands, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Austria and Hungary.

USSR, and other successor states such as the Ukraine amd Russia also use Police Dogs.

Once a Police Canine becomes either ill or pregnant, then they are retired at this point.

    I have a friend who trains police, bomb and cadaver dogs. Interesting training and great animals.
