Popular Sci-Fi TV Shows of the 80s

Diving back into the archives of popular science fiction television shows from the 1980s might seem pretty "painful" considering the advances made in special effects technology. But TV shows of yesterday have a certain charm that seems to have become lost in the gaps left between reality shows and dirt-slinging dramas. Check out a few sci-fi television highlights of the enchanting 1980s.

ALF (1986-1990)

This show about a furry, snouted alien from the planet Melmac was a surprise hit amongst adults and kids alike. "Alf" (which stands for Alien Life Form) warmed hearts with his sarcastic humor but lovable disposition. The show had its idiosyncracies, including a sardonic (and whiny) patriarch, an easygoing wife, and a set of milquetoast kids. The unusual premise of the sitcom, and snappy scriptwriting made Alf a national phenomenon;. The show lasted for four seasons.

Buck Rogers (1977-1981)

This name immediately recalls the staunch, well-groomed images of stars Gil Gerard and Erin Gray (also seen in 80s sitcom, "Silver Spoons.") But most don't realize that this television series is actually based on the "Buck Rogers" character featured in novellas and comics from the 1920s. The television series followed NASA pilot Buck Rogers, attempting to adjust to 25th century life after having been frozen for over 500 years.

Alien Nation (1989-1990)

This innovative sci-fi TV show was introduced at the end of the decade, and only lasted one season. Perhaps the world wasn't quite ready to engage in the lives of alien-human hybrid people. Fox execs cited a financial crunch for "Alien Nation's" ultimate cancellation. Following themes of prejudice and bigotry, this was one of the first television shows to integrate alien themes with already existing social issues.

The Twilight Zone (The First Revival: 1985-1989)

Most people familiar with "The Twilight Zone" appreciate the original's (1959) fresh, yet creepy take on other dimensions and realities. The infamous opening credits, complete with creepy announcement-are forever burned into our brains. The "revival" of the program in 1985 came with mixed reviews. But the new series, and its fresh new spin-kept it a ratings favorite-and lasted for four seasons.

    Shannon:
Are you talking about the show "Sliders?" I thought that was more toward the nineties, but that's the best my memory could come up with.

I am trying to remember a sci-fi show/series that aired in the late '70s to '80s; it had to do with four or five people caught in a time warp where they are trying to get back to their 'earth'. If anyone can tell me this title, please email me: stjan98@yahoo.com.
