A chroma screen allows you to effectively incorporate visual effects in your live-action footage. Interestingly, this technique is already very accessible even when making home movies. This tool is often referred to as a blue or green screen background, and you can buy one or make your own at a very reasonable price.
The chroma screen is placed behind the actors, props, and sets, then this background gets replaced by the visual effects you intend to use for your footage. This technique is widely used in films, TV shows, music videos, TV commercials, and even online videos. To give you more ideas on how to take advantage of this technique, here is a list of some of the most popular uses of the chroma screen background in film and TV productions:
Weather Maps in Weather Forecasts
When you watch a weather forecast with the anchor or meteorologist showing a large weather map with moving elements, the person actually stands in front of a blue or green screen background while being shot. Since the person is not really seeing the same map as the viewers, a reference monitor is provided to him or her on one side of the studio and this serves as a visual guide.
This type of blue or green screen effect is connected to a program that readily replaces the chroma background with the weather map, which is very important in a live weather forecast.
Virtual Sets in News Broadcasts and Talk Shows
Instead of using real sets and painted background walls, some news programs and talk shows take advantage of the use of virtual sets. The production simply blocks the news anchor or talk show host at a certain area of the studio, then the blue or green screen background gets replaced by an elaborate virtual set that can be typically changed in a click.
Productions may use partly or completely virtual sets for their shows. Often times they combine actual sets with virtual sets to achieve the look they want. Aside from virtual sets, chroma backgrounds are also frequently incorporated with other graphics and animation works, or even additional video footage set smaller on the screen to create more dynamic shots.
Special Effects in Movies
Live-action clips are often times combined with computer-generated imagery (CGI) to create fantastic, surreal, creepy, or photorealistic effects for a movie. This way the production can produce the desired shots for the movie in more practical ways. For instance, the crew can separately shoot the actors running away from a large explosion, then the explosion can simply be a CGI work made for the movie. Sometimes, miniature shots are also shot separately then incorporated into other footage showing an actor reacting to the original miniature as if it's much larger than it really is.
