India earned her political freedom on 15th august, 1947. But she has to attain so many other freedoms. The economic freedom is one of them. All the under developed nation are struggling hard on this front and India is no exception to it. The economic freedom means freedom from poverty. To achieve this, the government of India initiated the five years plan. But all this planning could not secure the end for which it was meant. The rising population has become a problem for the national planning and the economist to cope with. Therefore the government of India is paying all this attention and employing all its energies to this gigantic problem of family planning.
No doubt, it is not only the problem of India but also problem of the world. World population is also increasing at a faster rate. India's rate of increase in population is about two percent which means that it will create a great problem for a country like ours which is already overpopulated. This problem becomes more complicated in view of the fact that India lives in villages. To add to this, is the difficulty that our village people are illiterate and superstitious. For them Planned Parenthood is a taboo because the children are considered the gift of god.
While, with better facilities in health the child mortality rate has also gone down, on the other hand, due to poverty and lack of other recreational means for the common man, the population is increasing with formidable strides. All the gains of the five years plans have gone waste. Therefore population planning has now taken priority above all.
Although the planning realized the importance of family planning as far back as 1952 and the government initiated it, it could not make any impact on the people. Day by day the government realized its importance and more stress was laid upon it. Large sum have been sanctioned by the state for which they get cent percent financial help from the central government. The aim is to reduce the birth rate to a considerable extent. To make it a success, all the urban health centre, rural health centre and voluntary organizations have been hardness. Abortion has been maid legal. People are being educated in this regards. Sex education is being included in curriculum. Mass media like cinema and advertisement are being utilized. Different kinds of incentive are augmenting every possible effort to thwart the menace of population explosion.
