Dogs to Humans Ratios in Thirty Cities

An article entitled "Atlas A-list", by Susan Chaney, in the September 2010 issue of Dog Fancy magazine reveals that the populations of many of the dog-loving cities listed eleven through forty aren't far ahead of their numbers for dog companions.

A former Dog Fancy editor, Chaney and her team roamed the United States to learn more about dog-city friendly locations, and dug out canine friendly facts from the magazine's database and its readers to produce the September issue article.

Related numbers in the article say two cities in the 11 to 40 ranking have about one canine in their population for every two human beings, three cities have a one to three ratio, four cities are one to five, and ten of the cities listed in the 11 to 40 rankings have one canine for every four human beings.

Cities in the One to Two and One to Three Ratios

The two cities in the 11 through 40 ranking with a dogs-to-human beings ratio of about one half are Fargo, North Dakota, 53,580 dogs to 94,000 human beings, and Phoenix, Arizona, 768,000 to 1,512,986.

Briarcliff Manor, New York has a human population of 9,895 with 3,200 dogs in residence, or roughly a one to three ratio, as does Coeur d'Alene, Idaho with 17,000 dogs to 45,790 humans, and Waukesha, Wisconsin, 25,000 canines to 67,800 human citizens.

Long Beach, California reports approximately a one to five ratio in dogs to humans, 496,000 to 103,000, and Park City, Utah rates a bit under the one fifth mark with 1,700 dogs and 8,000 human citizens. Also in the one fifth range is Seattle, Washington with 125,000 canines and 600,000 persons in residence. A ballpark figure for Charleston, South Carolina puts that city near the one-fifth ratio with its 25,600 dogs and 111,978 human beings.

Cities in the Dog-Humans One to Four Population Ratio

Colorado has three cities listed in the eleven to forty range of most dog appreciative, and two of those locations rank in the noted one-quarter ratio.
