Pornography: Social or Political Problem?

Julie E.
With the recent ban of violent pornography in the UK the line between personal to social problem has been crossed. It's easy to say that Pornography is a personal problem brought on by the freewill of it's own consumers and protected under the first admendment. However, what about the controversial connections to rape, violence and objectification against women (and in my opinion, in some cases, men)? What about the fact that a high percent of pornographic films do not use condoms and some believe it has attributed to the rise of adolescent unprotected sex? A lot of things that are seen as deviant to society are protected under the constitution (right to assembly (Ku Klux Klan, etc)) but what about pornography? The internet has made it so easy to access that anyone, minors included, can get a hold of it and sometimes these people may not be able to distinguish reality from fantasy. I do not believe it is morally right to have something so detrimental to society in the hands of anyone with an internet connection.

While some of the research seems awkward and perhaps even propaganda I have to stand next to my opinion and say it objectifies women and I do not believe that is right. I realize that there is nothing society can do to ban porn even if they wanted to but the employees of pornography companies have been shifting in the recent decade. More women are becoming involved in porn making it a "safer" place for women and some companies are even making what they call "women-friendly porn." Others make their stars wear condoms to try to influence safe sex. I believe that pornography companies may have the chance to redeem themselves in the future even though I'm not familiar with "women-friendly porn" and I have not been able to form an opinion on that.

Plus, as just a sidenote that relates somewhat, I read a book called Female Chauvinist Pigs: Women and the Rise of Raunch Culture by Aerial Levy and she interviews many women in the book and a large percent of them said that when they are around men they feel like they are posing to relate more to the porn stars. A lot of them didn't like it but believed they had to in order to attract a male. If pornography is making women so insecure with themselves that they are constantly putting on a sexual facade and acting like a pseudo-Jenna Jameson to the point of where they themselves are not enjoying sexual activity I believe that it's possibly a bigger social problem then what most people are willing to admit.

I don't think all types need to be banned, but certainly the "gonzo" type or extreme porn should be banned.Anything depicting violence, rape, humiliation or the act of someone getting hurt serves absolutely no good to society at all.It hurts everyone.

While there is alot of porn, there is alot of porn because alot of people want to see it. While there are dangers, I can't see a need for any bans other than something similar to what the UK has done..

You can't ban something just because you don't like it. "I disapprove of what you say [or do], but I will defend to the death your right to say [or do] it."
