Porsche 924: Tradition of Quality Performance

Porsche 924 was manufactured by German automaker "Porsche-AG". It's a FR Sports car model & its 1st appearance took place in the year 1975. Oil crisis in a middle of 70th created a serious problem for car's manufactures. Any company was looking a way to escape from a crisis. Porsche fixed a problem of an oil crisis in their own way. In despite of a big success of Porsche 911, the company decided to proceed with a new car - Porsche 924. What is more important, a new model hadn't any connection to a famous Porsche 911, wasn't a result of improving of a base model Porsche 911. Designers did it from a "clean page". A budget model of Porsche 924 was more than 1.5 time cheaper than a base model of Porsche 911. So, in 1975 customers had a chance to evaluate all advantages of a new model.

Hull

First of all, let us start by saying, that builders generally changed their style at all. In a new model of Porsche they designed a position of the engine in forward part of a car, while a gear box was positioned inside. A new hull wasn't similar to any cars of Porsche's row. It main sign was a perfect dynamic's characteristics (even forward lights were hid inside a hull in order to minimize an air impedance.).

Engine

A new car was equipped with forth cylinders, 2000 cubic cm engine, capacity of 125 h.p. A new engine had a water cooling system, what was a very seldom way for Porsche manufactory. Porsche 924 engine had a distributor for fuel injectors and many others developments, which were a modern technology by that time. We have to draw your attention to a fact, that a new engine for Porsche 924 wasn't designed by Porsche engineers. It was bought from Audi, to be a more precisely, from Volkswagen. Even more, Porsche 924 cars were manufactured at a former factory NSU, which belonged to Audi Company and lately was bought by Volkswagen. No need to remind you, that a modern advantage of Porsche cars was a forward position of engine. In despite of this matter, designers adhered to remain a gear box inside a saloon, it was the most ideal decision (honestly saying manufacturers failure with a technology of a process). Finally,

Forth steps mechanical gear (automatic gear at that time was available for extra payment only) was joined with a reduction gear. The latest generations of Porsche 924 cars had a modified turbo engine with volume 2500 cubic cm and capacity of 170 h.p.

Saloon

Like in other luxury cars, saloon of Porsche 924 had all signs of elegancy and comfort. Different colors of leather, expensive woods, metal's inserts were used by designers to provide the car all signs of it class. Being restricted with agreement with Volkswagen, a many special signs of Volkswagen's cars were used also (mostly we are talking for a color of different displays). It was a modern approach of designers to a matter of different seat's adjustments, sun beam's protection of forward and aft windshield glasses, nozzles for washing of forward glass with pre-heating device , ultra modern stereo system and a many other things.

Various

In a year 1977 model Porsche 924 had won a would championship among groups 5.6. In order to celebrate of above victory, a special modification of Porsche 924 was developed. It got a name

"Martin Edition". A model had a special sign; all cars were painted in a white color only and had a very expensive interior.

In a year of 1978 customers got a new version of Porsche 924 equipped with turbo engine capacity of 170 h.p., all disks brakes and with many other improvements. Those cars were considered the most economy car among it class.

In July 1985 the last Porsche 924 was manufactured. From the first days till completion of manufacturing, Porsche produced 137500 cars of this model Evaluating of Porsche 924, we could say, that model was non-standard for Porsche, while it was a traditional for other manufacturers. In a view of above the model couldn't win a market either in Europe or in USA. Customers in USA didn't like it for a weak engine, while customers in Europe were adhering with Porsche 911. Model Porsche 924 had been lasted almost 10 years
