plug-in hybrid automaker
as it releases its clean and
'green' 918 Spyder hybrid
supercar.
Can the term hybrid and
supercar coexist? Well,
Porsche claims the car
will accelerate from 0-62
mph in 3.2 seconds and it
will lap the Nurburgring in
seven-and-one-half minutes.
This is comparable to Nissan's GT-R supercar.
This Porsche is a concept that has a 500 hp high performance V8 engine with
a maximum engine speed of 9200 rpms combined with electric motors at the
front and rear axles. The car's lithium-ion batteries are fluid cooled and they
can be recharged in a regular electrical wall outlet.
The 918 Spyder hybrid emits an average of just 70 grams of carbon dioxide.
For comparison, the third-generation Toyota Prius - the best known hybrid car -
emits 89 g/km. Conventional super sports cars such as Ferrari and Lamborghini
emit 400 to 500 g/km.
Driving legend and Porsche test driver Walter Rohrl comments regarding
the Porsche hybrid, "This car goes even faster than the last super sports car
from Porsche, the Carrera GT."
Last, but not least, Porsche claims the 918 Spyder hybrid uses just three liters
of fuel to travel 100 kilometer or 94 miles per imperial gallon. On a regular U.S.
gallon of fuel, this fast car gets only 78 mpg!
Porsche is also unveiling two other hybrids - the Cayenne S hybrid SUV
and the 911 GT R hybrid race car.
There is only one more major concern regarding these Porsche hybrids -
what will they cost?
