The Port Orange police department is promoting bike safety by handing out free bike helmets to children and teens in Volusia County.

In a press release the Port Orange police are encouraging parents in Volusia County to be aware of their children when they are riding their bikes and to make sure they always wear a bike helmet. Hundreds of children and teens are injured or die each year when they fall off their bike while not wearing a helmet and hit their heads.

Florida law requires anyone under the age of 16 who rides a bike to wear an approved helmet.

Police say that during the warm summer months when children aren't at school they see more bike accidents on trails and roadways in the county.

The helmets are available on a first come, first serve basis. For more information and to make an appointment to pick up a helmet, call Crime Prevention Officer Dave Miller at 386-506-5822.
