Even in non-Arctic weather, a flickering fire has the power to create instant ambiance, warming the look of a room while making those in it feel more comfortable and at ease. Add the bonus of the extra heat for the room, and there's no question about why fireplaces are often high on renters' and home buyers' lists of must-haves.
Unfortunately for apartments and condos, true fireplaces are options that, unless they were originally part of a building that was rehabbed, are pretty expensive. And even if they were an original part of an older structure, chances are they're no longer safe to use.
Thankfully, technology has come to the rescue yet again with the arrival of vent- and fume-free electric fireplaces that can both mimic the visually warming effects of standard fireplaces while eliminating the need for real wood, gas connections, chimneys or venting.
A great inexpensive example is the Paula electric fireplace from Target ($379.99 at Target.com). The complete set includes a wood surround and mantle, screen kit, cement "log," metal fire box and decorative coal cinders, and finishes are available in either golden oak or mahogany.
Best of all, it's completely portable and ventless. The flame is produced using Sunjel gel fuel, which is clean-burning, non-toxic, fume-free and environmentally friendly.
If it's ambiance plus supplemental heat that you're interested in, try the Electraflame line of products from Dimplex (www.Dimplex.com). These plug-in fireplaces combine the high-quality workmanship you'd expect to find in a custom-built mantel with the latest in electrical flame technology, and area in which Dimplex is the world leader. The Dimplex system allows for a completely ventless and portable system while incorporating a blower and thermostat system to regulate heat distribution.
The system is controlled with an on/off remote control, and most models provide at least 5,000 BTUs/hour of heat. They require only a standard 120-volt household outlet and are available in a variety of styles, from standard versions to models that fit in corners and incorporate entertainment centers and bookshelves. Smaller units like the sleek Cambridge are perfect for condos and apartments where space is at a premium.
So don't despair when winter's chill makes you long for the cozy comfort of a fire, and forget about chopping and hauling wood. Now, it's as easy as plug-and-play.
