PortableApps Software Provides Mobility and Security

OpenOffice.org, Instant Messaging, Mozilla Firefox Among the Slate of Programs Going Portable

Using public computers can be dangerous.

If you are like me, every time you use a public computer you're worried that you might somehow leave a small artifact behind that could expose your email or other personal information to the next user. That's why I'm a huge fan of PortableApps.com software.

Using any inexpensive flash memory drive, you can host a suite of robust applications that can run on most Windows computers. With my $20 512 MB Lexar flash drive, I carry OpenOffice.org around with me, which is a Microsoft Office compatible office suite with a word processor, spreadsheet and database tools, a presentation tool, and more. I also carry Gaim, a multi-purpose instant messaging client, so that I can connect to my friends on ICQ, AIM, MSN, Google Talk, and Yahoo even while I'm using computers that don't have those programs installed. Other useful utilities on my thumb drive include the free virus scanner ClamWin, a robust graphics editing tool called GIMP, and the 7-ZIP compression and decompression software.

The single best application for public portable computing, however, is the free Firefox browser.

I have Firefox Portable installed with several useful extensions. By using this browser on public computers, all my personal information stays with me - nothing is left on the host computer. Also, all my bookmarks come with me wherever I go.

Firefox plug-ins provide even more functionality beyond what the PortableApps software provides. I have FireFTP, a free FTP plug-in that lets me log-on to web and public servers, as well as ChatZilla, a free IRC chat plug-in.

When you need to indulge your urge for fun, PortableApps has optional games that you can install and carry with you, including Soduku, Poker, and a Mine Sweeper clone. The team at PortableApps is always cranking out new applications that you can install.

Beyond the need for personal privacy, PortableApps also is starting to feel another need - the need for improved accessibility.

Impaired users can now carry around an on-screen keyboard to use on any computer. In addition to the on-screen keyboard, impaired users can carry around a magnifying glass and other accessibility tools. Never again will a special-needs computer user have to get on a computer not knowing whether or not it is equipped with the tools necessary for them to use it.

PortableApps provides security and peace of mind while using public PCs. A thumb drive with these applications should be on everyone's key chain.
