Porter, Indiana - Shelton Fireworks Booms 4th of July

Largest Warehouses Are a Success in My Experience

Althea Floyd
With locations in Indiana, Missouri, South Carolina, and Alabama Shelton Fireworks can claim not only the largest fireworks warehouses, but the best customer satisfaction, and values, in the United States.

Growing up Shelton Fireworks was always a gigantic red building filled with forbidden mystery, located just across the street from Krazy Kaplains, a yellow, ominous looking fireworks warehouse, along Highway 20 in Porter, Indiana. I was not allowed to play with fireworks as a child. That is, not until my step father convinced my mother and grandmother that I wouldn't "shoot my eye out." I was exhilarated the first time I was able to walk through Shelton's big, red doors with my step father, and 12 years later I'm still going back for all of my 4th of July needs, even though I've since moved away from Porter.

Shelton simply has the best values, and the best customer services. Not only do I feel like I'm getting a deal when I walk out of the warehouse, but I feel like I'm safe. The 4th of July has been my favorite holiday for a long time, and I've sampled fireworks from other locations: retail stores, convenience stores, side of the road shacks. I get a little nervous when lighting those wicks, a nervousness I don't feel with fireworks from Shelton. Friendly police officers area always standing at the door of Shelton, just to make sure no one accidently lights up a cigarette. The store is heavily staffed with employees, usually high school and college students, which is just perfect. I know how hard it is for college students to get a summer job. I've been there, and I'm glad Shelton gives them a place to work. Not only that, but these kids are usually the most informed about fireworks as well, usually putting a heavy portion of their paychecks right back into the store.

Though safety is an important measure, it's not the only value I consider when preparing for my 4th of July bashes. To me, all life is about experience, and Shelton has lengthened my favorite holiday for me, making my annual shopping trip a part of the experience. Fair style vendors set up shop and picnic tables outside the store. My husband and I can stop for a hot dog and an elephant ear before going in to choose our fireworks. The place is always bustling, and it gets me in the mood for the 4th of July carnival, which we usually attend after our trip to Shelton.

And I have money left to spend at the carnival too! I am a student, and my funds are severely limited, so I appreciate that I can walk out of the shop with 2 bags full of fireworks and still have some twenties in my wallet. Shelton gives away freebees with your purchases. If you go up to the counter and are $5 over your budget, they'll throw that $5 firework in for free. The employees are great; they want to help you out. They also work very hard to keep the lines moving. I've waited in line longer on an ordinary Saturday night at Wal-Mart than I have at Shelton on July 3rd.

Last year, my husband and I came back from Michigan early so we could get our fireworks from Shelton. This year we are spending our 4th of July holiday in Pennsylvania, and we're bringing fireworks from the Porter Shelton, even though it is not on the way! If you want to start your 4th with a boom, shop at Shelton. You won't be dissipointed.

I received suggestions from a snotty teenager who seemed like he was making things up as he went along. Sure enough, got home and the fireworks were unimpressive and (in retrospect) way overpriced.
