Portland Oregon Arts, BeMuse: The Unveiling, June 1 2011
Hybrid Arts Project: Be the Muse and Be Mused
Art is simultaneously the loneliest thing a person can do and the most sociable. To go into yourself to find the thing that must be said, the thing that must be painted or recorded or photographed or explained or witnessed. To struggle to bear accurate and passionate witness to a truth that is difficult to articulate fully in the darkness of your own mind and to force it into the light --on to the canvas, the page, the stage!-- and to demand the world experience it, consider it, share/witness.
Art is the primal communication. It is a dialog between Id and Ego, God and Man, our ancestors and our children, humanity's History and its Future, emotion and intellect.
It is a conversation between the artist and herself, between artist and the audience, between the artist and her contemporaries and the canon of art that existed before this interloper forced its conversation on the scene.
The first question a viewer asks is... what inspired this?
In attempt to proliferate Art and inspiration, to honor our diverse gods, to litter the canon, and to get our jollies we are ecstatic to present

Art inspiring Art inspiring Artists

What exactly does "Art inspiring Art inspiring Artists" mean?
The opening show paired some of the finest local artists and poets to create a work inspired by the other's work. The artists, visual and literary, had never met before and were in most cases unfamiliar with each other's work. We then encouraged our muses/artists to get ekphrasiscal on each other. Ekphrasis is usually defined as "Noun : a literary description of or commentary on a visual work of art ". It has become the word for poetry or prose inspired by art and in our alliterative, sculpting hands it also means an "artistic depiction of a poem".
The first show, Bemuse: meet the muses, was a celebratory meeting of select Portland, Oregon artists and poets. They then had approximately 20 days to create a new work to be shown at the Unveiling.
