Portland, Oregon's No Kill Shelters for Dogs and Cats

Looking to Place an Animal or Adopt an Animal or Volunteer to Help Here Are Some No Kill Shelters to Contact

CJMathis
Portland, Oregon has several forms of animal shelters close to the city however; many of these shelters are not no kill shelters. I and probably everyone else, understand the over crowding and ability for a shelter to take in only a certain number of animals but, after 20 years of doing animal rescue I cannot in my heart take an animal to a Kill shelter.

If you find yourself in need of an animal shelter here are some locations of no kill shelters in the Portland Oregon area.

The Cat Adoption Team
13174 SW Galbreath Drive
Sherwood Oregon

http://catadoptionteam.org

Hours: Monday - Friday 11:00 am to 7:00 pm
Saturday - Sunday 10:00 am to 6:00 pm

Sherwood is only a few moments from Portland, being a metropolitan area of the city so taking a stray or unwanted cat to the center is not difficult. For clear directions visit the website included in the title. This is a no kill shelter and houses hundreds of cats of varying sizes, colors and breeds. The Cat Adoption Team also fosters some of their cats to local foster homes to create a more adoptable family pet. A wonderful team of caregivers work with the many cats located at The Cat Adoption Team headquarters giving individual attention to each cat and kitten in their care.

If you are looking to volunteer then contact the shelter for instructions on paperwork and training classes.

PAWS
1741 Willamette Falls Drive
West Linn Oregon

www.pawsanimalshelter.org

Another location in the outskirts of Portland but easy to travel too, PAWS is also a no kill shelter for dogs and cats. This non-profit shelter can always use donations from those who love animals and wish to see them all in a forever home. Rules for adoption are quite strict to help make sure the home is appropriate for the pet chosen for adoption. If adopting obtain the adoption contract and submit it completed. The PAWS team will contact you if more information is needed. Some things to remember is you must be 18 years of age or have parental consent to adopt a pet; if living in rental property you must provide evidence that the landlord approves of the pet in the home, an inspection to make sure there is enough space on the property and a good fence for a dog may be requested.

PAWS can always use volunteers to do many things for their furry friends, contact them for training and instruction on how to become a foster parent of one of these beautiful furry kids.

Family Dogs New Life Shelter

www.familydogsnewlife.org

Hours: Saturday 11:00 am to 6:00 pm
Sunday 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm

There is no appointment necessary and visiting the website gives you a wonderful picture of the animals that are in need of a forever home with a bit of the history behind how they became shelter dogs. Most of these pets are in need of a forever home and are well behaved and house broken. If an animal comes to the Family Dogs New Life Shelter in need of socialization and some training they are placed in a foster home where they are provided with what they each need. Volunteers are always needed contact Family Dogs New Life to volunteer time for these homeless and sometimes loveless friends.

Oregon Humane Society is Portland's largest no kill shelter. Housing dogs, cats, small animals and even some large animals such as horses, llamas and sheep OHS has been in the area for 141 years. Many of the OHS employees are volunteers. OHS make the program easy and comfortable, once training (9 hour class and hands on instruction) you can set your own volunteer hours. Check in and check out at the KIOSK and all that is required of you is a minimum of 12 hours a month.

OHS also provides the residents of Portland and surrounding areas with dog training classes, pet instruction and a gift store for those pet needs such as a leash, collar, crate and much more. OHS has strict adoption rules and no matter the size or kind of pet the client is trying to adopt the OHS rules apply and are enforced.

I couldn't agree with you more. It breaks my heart to think of innocent animals being euthanized because no one wants them. I don't understand why more people don't adopt shelter animals rather than buying from a breeder.
