Portuguese Water Dogs have a great love for people, extreme intelligence, love for training, retrieving, working, and make great service dogs, traits they have passed on to the poodle. An owner needs to keep their Portie active both physically and mentally, or they can become destructive around the house. They are great retrievers, herders, and gun dogs and have been known to rescue drowning people.
Questions about Portuguese Water Dogs
Do Portuguese Water Dogs need water to be mentally healthy? Portuguese Water Dogs love water, but don't necessarily need it to be healthy. As long as they get lots of exercise, they should thrive. But once in awhile, if you can, take your Portie to a lake and watch them have more fun than you thought was possible!
What about people with allergies? Portuguese Water Dogs are hypoallergenic and should be fine around people with allergies.
How are they around children? Great! They tend to bond strongly with one or more members of the family.
What about shedding? They don't shed a lot, but Portuguese Water Dogs do shed a little, as do all mammals including humans.
What about maintenance? Portuguese Water Dogs have coats similar to a poodle's, so they do need to be brushed, combed, and then trimmed once in awhile. PWD's have a tendency to chew, so be sure to provide something they are allowed to chew on. As most breeds have, Portuguese Water Dogs have inherited genetic diseases. You can find more information on those and the dog itself at the Portuguese Water Dog Club of America.

Some famous owners of Portuguese Water dogs are Ted Kennedy, who gave a Portuguese Water Dog to President Obama's daughters, Sasha and Malia.

Post a CommentGreat article on Portuguese Water Dogs!
Never heard of them! Learned something new.
Great info! I predict that PWD's will become much more popular in the near future!
Good overview of this breed. I wrote on them also, and this dog is not for everybody! They tend to have dominant personalities and do best with dog owners who have some experience with dogs. They don't like to be left alone for long periods of time, and need to be in the company of their people. But I so want one!
I love this breed.
