Positive Thinking or You Are What You Think

Day 37 - a Year with God

Marilyn Quinn
I planned to work my way day-by-day through Proverbs. Lots about wisdom there and I was soaking up the instruction. However, I find myself needing to concentrate on my mind a bit. My thinking needs some positive direction.

There are times that I find myself struggling with my thoughts and they take a negative turn and everything seems to follow along with that.

"Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things." Philippians 4:8

This is one of those scriptures I have to keep referring back to on occasion. When I find my mind going to that bad place, sometimes for absolutely no reason. It reminds me that I should be looking for the good. I know that one bad feeling or one day of feeling depressed is not my entire existence, but when you are in the middle of it you can't always see that.

I am fortunate in what I have; a loving family, a home, security, good health. It just goes to show you how easy it is for evil to creep in and put doubt in our hearts and minds.

"We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ." 2 Corinthians 10:5

We have to take those thoughts captive; keep them from running where they want and getting out of control. I am getting better at stopping them sooner that I could before; practice, practice, practice. I would love to be able to stop them all-together; even the most spiritual person I know still has thoughts that creep in on them.

It seems to me they may be better at squashing them, but they still come. I find it difficult to conceal my dip in moods when the bad thoughts are assaulting me. Someone more experienced and better versed in Bible scripture probably is better equipped to stop the mental war of thoughts and keep it from seeping out into their life and relationships.

I am sure you have heard people say "you are what you eat"? Well, I say you are what you think. Or you become what you think about. What we put our thoughts and energy into becomes manifest. Perhaps the most powerful scripture I have found regarding why we should control our thinking is Proverbs 23:7 "For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he."
