The answer tends to be Emotional Volatility - a state of mind in which a person feels extremely positive one day and extremely negative the other. This results in under-performance, decreasing confidence level and worse at times, trashing one's professional or/and personal life.
People try out different remedies to fight this unwanted state of mind, some try yoga, meditation, exercise, etc. But the basic fact that these remedies teach is analyze, anticipate, act.
Before we start on how we can avoid such a devastating mental state, let us put some light on what are the causes so as to better understand where we are going wrong.
'I, me and myself' time
At the end of day, or even at the start, talk to yourself how you are going to organize or just carry out your daily routine. Reflect back at the end of the day the thing s you have achieved and that are yet to be achieved. Take time to arrange your wardrobe, your shoe case, your reading table, etc. Do work that relates to YOU, is for YOU. A major reason of dissatisfaction in personal life is that people tend to forget the fact that even their body and mind both need care and moreover time and rest.
Issues relating to personal life
Emotional volatility is also caused by stress created by relationships. Your spouse, children, friends and relatives all contribute and greatly play a role in conditioning your mental state. And what controls the conditioning feature is your take on the relationship. Be soft and clear, true and faithful, joyous and healthy, otherwise severe depression and frustration are the immediate ill-effects of a bad or not-so-good relationship.
Post-retirement depression
Men and women both who are workaholics tend to suffer from this devastating depression. The attitude towards life takes a complete setback, their minds compares them to a person who is struggling for a job poorly. This inability to think positively should be avoided at all risk. What you think of yourself will make others also think of you in that manner, so keeping the good-for-nothing outlook is very dangerous in society. Even if you could create a plane out of scrap after retirement and you started thinking negatively, that now you have retired and everything is over for you, it is because you are being a pessimist. This very thought reduces your every chance of retaining back the plus attitude.
Imaginary circumstances
No one can predict the future, astrologers do that and even they get it wrong many times. Unforeseen circumstances are baseless reasons to be worried about unless and until their chances with proof are worth taking into consideration, if so then act on it rather than to start thinking whether to act or to not. Imaginary circumstances such as death of loved ones, break ups, betrayals, etc often throw a person into depression resulting in extreme indecisive actions and disturbing patterns of behavior.
Lack of expression
Not everyone is good at expressing themselves. Sometimes their opinion might count but their inability to express themselves ruins the game. A shortage of communication skills greatly frustrates the mind and can make one ill-humored and oversensitive. Thus making him unapproachable and boycotted at the work environment or even at the social front.
Thus, now that we have a better idea of what wrong was unknowingly happening by us, we now consider on the most important part, on how to tackle negative emotions.
Meditate
The evergreen solution to all stress and depression - meditation. It has believed to work wonders from putting a persons professional life back on track from bankruptcy, resolving differences in relationships, etc. Meditation includes a brief moment of silent breathing and freeing the mind from all thoughts,concentrating on just one fact - breathing. This age-old science has helped one and all overcome the severest of anxiety disorders. In 24 hours, 15-25 minutes of meditation is highly recommended.
Home is no work place
Chalk eoff the habit of bringing work home, esp. workaholics. Work environment and home environment are two totally different environments. When the work day ends, end all work there itself. If you couldn't complete it, try reorganizing, coordinate between things better, go home, rest and reflect, talk to yourself and if possible and only if necessary discuss it with fellow family members, different point of views help a lot. Next time keep those heaps of files at your office desk, there are people waiting for you at home hoping to spend quality time with you, and you wanted to spend time with pieces of paper. Remember people first, the n work.
Social interaction
Shift your focus from your own day-to-day problems to bigger problems that the world faces. You might be thinking what a great suggestion this was, to shift one's focus from a smaller problem to a bigger! Why, I'll explain that too. What happens is when you shift your focus to a larger problem not just relating to you but to the society it develops humane feelings which fight stress and emotional volatility. It generates a healthy cure and makes pain tolerable. Like I said before people first.
Beautiful nature
Enjoy nature, morning walks or even a weekend small stroll around the neighborhood helps your mind to stretch out from stress and relax. Nature is the best distraction and believe it or not try traveling around the country side, or beach side and try thinking about your work at the same time, even the toughest workaholics fall for the bait. Go for a picnic, hiking, swimming, try gardening, or just praise the Lord for the beautiful world around you, and you feel feel a distinct change in the smell and quality of the air you breathe out there.
Analyze psychology
Meet people, and dint just hear them out, listen to them, understand their behavior, try talking about things that interests them, this will not only increase your knowledge base but also help you in recognizing people better thus improving your social, personal as well as professional life. Think what made a person behave in such a manner, what can you expect from a person in a particular situation, their reaction, their behavior, etc. At the same time don't forget to express yourself. Make sure the person in front of you completely gets the picture of what you are trying to convey. Use humor whenever necessary but not frequently and considering the environment. Allow free expression, take your time, try different ways, give examples. And never forget the 3 ego states:
Parent - aggressive, controlling, nurturing, understanding.
Child - passive, submissive, defiant, impulsive.
Adult - assertive, balanced, realistic, logical.
Organize
Planning , organizing, controlling and directing play major and successful roles in the management sector, and also proved that if applied at a lower level of management i.e individual management, results extremely fruitful. What you see affects the state of mind, keep surroundings clean, neat and well organized. If you see things trashed all over the place naturally and unavoidably you mind starts filling up with thoughts completely scattered or trashed. Keep not just yourself clean but also your surroundings clean, as a clean surrounding keeps your mind away from unwanted clutter, thus it negates the feeling of being overwhelmed and disorganized.
