Possible Cause of Crash of Continental Flight 3407 in Clarence, New York

Channel 2 news out of Buffalo, New York and the online edition of The Buffalo News are reporting that ice build up on the wings may have played a role in the crash of of Continental Flight 3407. Crews were able to obtain the flight data and cockpit voice recorders that are often referred to as "the Black Boxes" from the plane wreckage. Both were in excellent condition and after an initial listening in Washington it was reported that the flight crew was heard discussing significant ice build up on the leading edges of the plane's wings and windshield despite the fact the anti-icing system had been turned on.

It is unknown yet if the anti-icing system failed or if ice on the plane's wings was the cause of the crash. Further analysis of the data and recording is necessary and officials are not yet willing to speculate what lead to the planes deadly descent. It was announced that the data showed the landing gear had been let down and was then retracted. The plane was described as experiencing severe rolling and pitching in its last moments in the air.

It was also reported that terrorist activity has not yet been ruled out. There are a number of reasons the plane could have crashed and it may take days before officials are able to pinpoint a specific cause.
