Possible Food Causes Bedwetting

Cherie Bowser
If your child is still bedwetting during the night, they are not alone. There are many children and parents who have to deal with bedwetting. This occurs in many children and even teenagers. Some reasons that a child may still be bedwetting are due to hormonal problems, bladder problems, genetics, sleep problems, medical conditions and psychological problems. There are some foods that may cause bed wetting that you may want to have your child avoid towards the late afternoon and early evening. These foods can cause sensitivity or an increase in urine production that could still be causing your child to be bedwetting.

According to WebMD, the two foods that some believe may cause bedwetting, which are spicy foods and citrus, is a myth. There has been no evidence or connection between spicy foods and citrus foods that causes bedwetting. The only way that these two foods may cause bedwetting is if your child is allergic to one of these foods, which may cause bedwetting. You may want to test these foods to see your child is allergic to them or have a sensitivity to these foods that would cause bedwetting.

Dairy Products

According to the Not Milk website, there has been a strong correlation with children who are consuming milk close to bedtime could cause a child to be bed wetting. It is best to cut out dairy a few hours before going to bed to see if this works for you.

Caffeine

Caffeine is a diuretic and foods that contain caffeine will stimulate the urine production, which causes you to produce more urine. According to WebMD, you should stop eating any drinks or foods that contain caffeine in them during the late afternoon and evening.

Chocolate

Chocolate has caffeine, which will stimulate urine production. The family fun website shows the amount of caffeine in certain chocolates so that you can find out how much caffeine is in your chocolate drink and food. You can find a lot of caffeine in various types of chocolate, including chocolate milk and hot cocoa. The chocolate containing caffeine is a diuretic, which will cause your child to want to urinate more.

Food Triggers

Every child is different and according to Web MD, you should have your child keep a journal and write down the drink and foods they eat in the early afternoon and evening. There may be a certain food that the child is sensitive to that causes them to be bedwetting. This may be different from one child to the next, so that is why it is important to keep a journal. Some food allergens that may cause bedwetting are corn, eggs, peanuts, wheat, dairy, and soy.

Sugar Foods

Children may be sensitive to foods that contain sugar. You may want to write down if your child is consuming too much sugar before bedtime and they are bedwetting. Limit sugar foods in the early afternoon through evening to see if the bedwetting stops.
