Decorating Ideas to Get You Through the Winter

A. Hermitt
If you are like me, you've just taken down the Christmas decorations and still have a few boxes to put away. As you clean up after Christmas and remove all of these holiday decorations you are surely wondering what to do next. After all, it's a long way to spring, and without some transitional decorating ideas, you are sure to get the winter blahs.

A winter white decorating theme may seem barren, but when you introduce warm white blankets and lots of textured items to the room, you can create a wonderful winter wonderland that will keep you cheerful all winter. Look for white faux fur blankets and pillows. Use White tablecloths with silver or gold threads weaved in. Switch our some of your draperies, for a winter-white waffle weave texture. Add white ceramic vases, white roses, and frosted glass accessories.

Rush in the spring with a nature theme for your winter decorating. January is a great time to bring lush green houseplants into your home to increase oxygen levels and the mood into your home. In addition to your green plants, also look for houseplants that produce brightly covered leaves and even winter blooms. Amaryllis, Orchids, and Anthuriums will definitely brighten your home. Make sure there are a couple of large plants in each and every room.

Try out a fun and games theme for your winter decorating since you are stuck in the house all winter long. Get out all of your board games and display them prominently in your home. Display a couple of vintage board games in shadow frames and hang them on the wall. Place puzzles on the tables to encourage family members to try to put them together. Place a chess game on a small table between two chairs. Place a pile of board games on the coffee table. This will not only promote a family atmosphere, but it will keep the family happily playing together until Spring.

Go for an ultra luxurious decorating theme if your home feels cold and stark after taking down your holiday decorations. Splurge on a few rich home decor items like faux mink pillows for your sofas, crystals to hang from your chandelier, and tons of scented candles in flavors of chocolate, and apple spice. Add some gold vases (a combination of real, gold leaf, and gold paint), and display your finest china. Such a rich feel will keep you comfortable for the rest of the winter.

I am not a decorator. When I take down the Christmas decor, I have the other in place and it remains throughout the year.
