Other signs of depression may appear when he might not do the things your doctor has been asking you to watch for. When he does not hit these the developmental marks do not panic, just bring it up at the next appointment. He may appear to be bored and cry endlessly. He does not smile or laugh and generally looks depressed. Most people will notice if their child is depressed by the time the child is six months old.
Now the important thing about affecting your child's mood is to ask yourself am I depressed. Is my spouse depressed? If you are suffering from mood swings, having trouble sleeping, feel sad or anxious, have trouble eating or feel like you could hurt the baby, you may be depressed. If your spouse is exhibiting any signs of depression, you may want to talk to them about their feelings since it could be affecting the baby. You can ask them a few simple questions to figure out if he is depressed.
Ask him if he feels like he is starting to lose interest in former hobbies, social activities, and sex. Ask him if he has not been eating well or has been gaining weight rapidly. Pay attention if he is unable to sleep at night or oversleeping during the day. Is he physically drained or feeling like he has no energy, and having trouble concentrating. Does he become agitated or feel guilty? Has he been having random outbursts? He could be feeling the affects of depression physically as well like being achy or sore all over.
Early detection and treatment of any form of depression is critical for the entire family. The more the baby is exposed to depression, the higher his risk of developing long term problems. If you need help to care for your child while you recover from depression, do not be afraid to ask, this will help your child come out of his depression
