When you put away the witches, spiders and ghosts, your home can suddenly feel bare. But remember that the holidays are just around the corner. And with a little autumn decorating, you can cast the spell of the season both outside and inside your home. Here are a handful of ideas to inspire your post-Halloween decorating.
Pumpkins on sale
The mound of pumpkins displayed outside your supermarket will be put on sale after Halloween. Look for the freshest pumpkins. Buy different sizes and display your cluster of pumpkins by your front door. Don't carve your pumpkins, to help them last longer. With the cold November weather, your pumpkins are sure to last through Thanksgiving.
Fragrant pine cone decor
You'll find pine cones and bags of nuts at craft stores. Display the pine cones and nuts on a bed of potpourri in a large glass bowl or in a wicker basket, depending on your preference. Your living room or dining room table will look and smell great with this holiday decor.
Holiday candle display
You'll find beautiful autumn-hued candles at craft stores or even drug stores. Display a large, thick candle in a glass flower vase, so that the tip of the candle remains inside the vase. Pour sand all around the candle to hold it in place. Craft stores have colored sand, which can add beauty to this post-Halloween decorating idea.
Ornament bowls
While summer is a time to display fruit bowls, why not decorate your home for the holidays with Christmas ornaments? Display round ornaments in a bowl. Keep the top of the ornament facing down, so all that will show is a round, shiny surface. Display your ornament bowls on your entryway table, kitchen island, bathroom counter or on your bedroom vanity or dresser.
Twinkling lights
As the days grow shorter, you may wake up in the dark or come home from work in the dark (perhaps both). But if you hang Christmas light strings in special places, you'll decorate your home beautifully. Hang a light string around your front door or porch. Hang one around a bedroom window or around your back porch door.
Garland beauty
You'll find cheap, silk garlands at craft stores. Festoon a garland over your living room window. Twist a garland around your indoor plant pots. Tie a garland around your curtains instead of curtain tie-backs. Or drape a garland at the top of your shower curtain. You can even hang garlands from the eaves of your home.
Fruit Jugs
You'll find large glass jugs at craft stores or home decor stores (or even at thrift stores). Fill the jug with red apples or lemons all the way to the top. Display your fruit jug on your kitchen counter, on your living room window sill, or on your living room table in place of a flower arrangement.
