Post-It Notes

R.A. Riter
A Post-it note is a piece of paper that has a strip of adhesive that makes it transportable and sticky on multiple areas. They can be very helpful for writing notes and being able to detach them from the surface they are put on, such as walls, desks, or computers. They have been made into dozens of colors, shapes and sizes. The standard post-it, however, is canary yellow and three inches in length. Art Fry and Spencer Silver are the co-creators of the post-it.

In 1968, Silver developed a reusable adhesive. For five years, this new development was promoted but did not find success. Then, in 1974, Art Fry, who was a colleague of Silver's, came up with the idea to solidify his bookmark onto his book. The official product was developed in 1977. While the post-it did not become a success right away, free samples were given out in Boise, Idaho. During a survey, 90% of people said that they would buy the post-it. By 1980, the post-it was a nationwide phenomenon and was being sold everywhere in the United States. The following year resulted in the launching of the post-it in Canada and Europe. In 2003, a post-it Super Sticky was developed, as the note could now stick longer and on non-smooth surfaces.

A variation of the post-it has been made. The United States Postal Office uses yellow address labels that cover the entire back of the note. Regular post-it notes, however, only contain a small strip of adhesive that is located along only one of the sides. The 20th anniversary of the post-it was celebrated by having artists show their artwork on post-it notes. The most expensive post-it that was sold cost 640 pounds.

Post-its have been used in art and television. Paola Antonelli used Post-it notes in his show called Humble Masterpieces. They have also been used to create large artworks. Rebecca Murtaugh covered an entire room of post-it notes, using yellow for non-important items and neon items were marked in neon colored Post-its. Murals, figures, and portraits have also been developed using only Post-it notes.

Post-it notes are commonly used in film to designate the scene order. They are an easy way of showing the series of events in any order for a stationary task. They can also be re-ordered in a simple, clean way. Items can also be removed. Post-its are highly recommended for a use that is always changing.
