Postive Thinking Can Change Your Life

It Really is Mind Over Matter

Have you ever noticed how it seems that some people have all the luck and others always seem to fail? Have you ever listened to those that seemingly always fail at what they try to do? If you really listen to them, you may find that they all have one thing in common; their way of thinking. The same is true for those who seemingly always have the luck.

I am sure all of you have heard the saying, "It's mind over matter". I take this saying to mean that if you really put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything. Changing the way you look at life as well as the way you respond to different situations can greatly effect your life overall.

If you are a person who is continually telling yourself and others that you "just can't do it", chances are that you really won't be able to. If you tell yourself that your life is bad, you will have a bad life. On the other hand, if you can tell yourself that you "can do anything", that your goal is within your reach; if you take the time to actually see that goal and yourself reaching it, you will succeed.

I used to be the type of person who was always down on myself and my life. I would blame everyone else for my failings. I would tell myself that I wasn't able to do things. I even went so far as to tell myself that I couldn't make friends. At that point in my life, I was a very sad and lonely person.

One day, while feeling bad about myself, I was listening to the radio. I heard some guy on the radio talking about self-help and positive thinking. This guy was saying that if we tell ourselves that we can do things, and we continue telling ourselves, that we will achieve our goals. This man said that the more we tell ourselves something, the more we believe it whether it is good or bad.

This got me thinking. I really wondered how much truth was in his words. I decided right then and there to begin changing the way I think and talk to myself. I had wanted to go back to school at that time, but had been telling myself that I was too old and I would only fail if I went. For weeks, I told myself that the class I wanted to take was getting ready to start and not only would I enroll; I would pass this class with flying colors. Time came to enroll, and I did it. This was a big step for me. I actually felt proud of myself for the first time in a very long time I continued to tell myself that I would pass this class. . I went to class every day, and at the end of it, I did pass with flying colors. If I hadn't listened to that man on the radio, I probably would never have even tried.

Changing my thinking and the way I talk to myself has also helped in many other aspects of my life. I went from always being worried about how I would pay the bills or buy the groceries; telling myself that there just wasn't a way to do it, to telling myself, "Okay, I've been here before, I can do this." Yes, I still struggle at times, the difference is that I do not let it depress me like I used to. I know that I will find a way to take care of things, and rather than feeling sorry for myself, I stand up and find that way.

This has also helped me in losing weight. I used to tell myself that I was fat. I would complain about my weight, and it seemed that I would only get bigger no matter what I did. I started telling myself that I am thin and beautiful; I actually closed my eyes and saw myself losing weight and feeling better about my body. I found that when I started doing this, I felt better, I had a little more energy, and little by little, I noticed that I really was losing weight and looking good.

I believe that the saying "mind over matter" really does impact our lives. I, through my own experiences have seen and felt the difference having a positive attitude can have in my own life. If I had simply changed the radio station that day, or not listened to what I was hearing, it is hard telling where I would be today. I did listen, though, and now, I am a much more self-confident person, and I know that I can do anything that I set my mind to.
