Potty Training

The Life of the Stay at Home Mom

Ann Linton
My son is twenty-one months old. Yes, that's almost two years. He's a great kid, funny, loving, kind and spirited. Recently he has shown an interest in the "big boy potty". Joys, potty training.

Day 1. Noah sat on the potty for a good 10 minutes. Playing with some stuffed animals. All was going well, no freaking out, no jumping up screaming ( from me) but no "pee". So I finally let him go and what do I hear, "Mommy! Pee!" and I step in a nice warm puddle.

2nd try: sat on the potty while I played with the baby. She doesn't care if he uses the potty of not, she's just find in her cloth diaper. After all, Mommy changes her, no need to change that.

Day 2. Sat on the potty for longer this time. Thank goodness the baby was still sleeping. I must have said, "Noah , go potty", 5 million times. He didn't potty but he DID unroll a whole roll of toilet paper. It's fun to roll back up.

2nd try: Sat on the potty before bath time. I thought if Noah heard running water it would make him pee. No such luck.

Day 3. Yup, still at it. Not trying very hard, just want him to get use to sitting on the potty and maybe SOME day he will use it. Today was a battle, he didn't want to sit on the potty. Noah screamed, threw a Mega Block at my head and jumped off the potty. As I'm chasing his naked butt around the house I wonder WHY am I doing this to myself? I don't need him to be potty trained, he's not going to day care and it's not like I'm in a rush for him to grow up. Oh well, I give up. We can wait to start later in life. After all he's not yet two.

According to Freud, parents who utilize praise and rewards for using the toilet at the appropriate time encourage positive outcomes and help children feel capable and productive.
