Potty Training 101

Most children show interest in potty training between the ages of 18 months and 3 years old. There will be several key signs that they are ready to start potty training. First, you may notice that the child has stayed dry for several hours at a time. The child will also start having regular bowel movements; they will almost seem to come at certain times every day, almost schedule like. The child will most likely become uncomfortable if he/she has a wet or dirty diaper, they will want to be changed quickly or even start to take the diaper off of themselves. The child may ask to use the potty chair or the toilet, and may start asking to wear underwear. It will be obvious when your child is about to urinate or have a bowel movement, they might make a certain facial expression, hold themselves or even dance around. If your child tells you about having to use the potty or tells you about a dirty diaper, you should praise him/her and encourage them to let you know next time or in the case of a dirty diaper, to let you know in advance next time so that you may take them to the bathroom.

Once your child has taken an interest in potty training, get a potty chair for him/her. Make this fun for your child, maybe even have them help pick it out or have them decorate it with stickers. Help your child get used to the potty chair by having them sit on it frequently. Remember to use lots of praise and encouragement! This will make them feel like a big boy/girl. When you first notice the signs of your child needing to urinate or have a bowel movement, ask them if they want to use their potty chair and then take them to the chair. You will need to explain to your child what he needs to do once he gets on the chair. If your child shows resistance once he/she gets on the potty chair let them know everything will be alright, they may show resistance because they are scared. Only keep your child seated for a few minutes, any length of time beyond this and the child will lose interest or forget why they are on the chair.

Remember, children can become stressed very easily. Do not force potty training on your child and avoid punishing your child for mistakes or accidents.

I work full time and have 2 small children. I enjoy writing, finding the time...well that's another story. In my spare time I like to write, go fishing with my family, play bingo with my mom and go shopping,...  View profile
