Potty Training Tips

Your big kid is getting bigger every week and it might be time for pull ups and potty training. If your a first time trainer then your going to need to know some things to make it a little easier on the both of you. You may even want to make it fun together. Whatever you do, try not to show frustration or emotion if it's not going too well at first. Some signs you may notice that your little one is ready to potty train are going three hours without peeing, the toilet and potty are interesting to them and they try to get what ever is in their diaper out of it. Sometimes the child may even tell you they are going number one or number two. That is a good sign they know what their body is doing and they are aware of their surroundings.

I've compiled some tips for parents that will be jumping in the potty training game very soon and may not have a lot of experience in that category. All those rewards such as candy, stickers and toys won't work forever. Your child knows how to say no, in fact, it may be their favorite word at their current age. They really want to be their own person by now and they want as little help as possible. It's going to take more than a chocolate chip cookie to get them to learn to use the potty regularly.

One idea is to try something out of a cartoon that they are familiar with. Use one they usually watch like one with a superhero or princess. Say to your child they get to be the character in the cartoon when they are on the potty and they get to wear a hat or crown. Then if they get excited about it, tell them you really don't want them to be that character very much. This will be more appealing to them because it is something you really don't want them to do.

Use different scenarios that you can think of that really get their attention and you can see they get excited about. If you make it fun for the child the process should not take as long and they will want to learn more. Once you start them using pull ups, then never go back to diapers. That will only confuse them. It tells them it's ok not to progress. You should ditch the diapers or give them to someone who could use them once the training pants come out. Another thing that many kids enjoy doing is flushing the toilet. If they happen to go number two, explain to them that it goes in the toilet. Take them over to the toilet and dump it in there and let them flush it down the toilet. Wave bye bye and most likely they will do the same and get the idea of how things work.
