Poverty Creek Mountain Bike Trail in Blacksburg, Virgina

Janie King
Poverty Creek mountain bike trail is conveniently located in Brush Mountain area on the outskirts of Blacksburg, Virgina. The trail is a great location for those who don't have time to drive a long ways to go have a great ride. It's located very close to Virginia Tech but it feels out of the way. The entrance to Pandapas is located about 2.5 miles outside of Blacksburg.

The trail is part of the Pandapas Pond network of trails. Poverty Creek is easy to get to. Just travel towards Giles County on 460, the Pandapas area is well signed on 460. Once you see the signs you will travel about a mile and a half down a gravel trail. There is a large parking lot with plenty of free parking. Panadaps is a National Forest Service park, but there is no user fee.

The Poverty Creek trail consists of a double track so it gives users plenty of room to share the trail. I have seen dogs, horses and hikers when I have used this trail. The trail's starting evaluation starts at 2,000 ft and gets up to 2,800 at its highest point. This is a great trail for a family ride or for a beginning mountain biker. The trial could be rated as easy to moderate. It does have enough ups and downs to given even a seasoned rider a thrill. I enjoy the beautiful view of the man made Pandapas pond while I ride. Poverty Creek trail also offers an impressive view of the Virginia Tech campus and the city of Blacksburg. The trail is 15.5 miles total but this can be made a longer or short ride by getting on to another trail. Make sure to look at the maps at the trail head to plan out your route before you set out.
