Medicare is a federally funded and operated program designed to provide medical coverage to certain elderly and disabled individuals. Medicare may cover the cost of a power lift chair if it is medically necessary.
Step 1
Obtain a dispensing order or written order for a power lift chair from your physician. This order must include a description of the item that is needed, your full name, date of order and physician's signature and date. It typically needs an ICD-9-CM diagnosis code that states the exact medical diagnosis that requires treatment through use of a power lift chair.
Step 2
Fax, mail or submit an electronic copy of a Medicare claim form. Obtain the necessary claim forms by contacting 1-800-MEDICARE. These forms require the full name of the patient needing the power lift chair, the patient's address and phone number, information about the physician ordering the power lift chair, a copy of the order from the physician, the patient's date of birth and Medicare number, and other necessary information.
Step 3
Go to your local power lift chair store with the order from Medicare. Medicare will typically cover 80 percent of the rental cost for up to 13 months. You will be responsible for the other 20 percent. If you have secondary insurance, that insurance may pay for the remaining 20 percent.Skill
