Powerball Winner Accepts Check for $189,000,000

Florida's Lucky Winner

Lee Davis
According to an announcement from Orlando's News 13 and confirming neighborhood rumors, Florida Lottery officials announced the October 3, 2009 winner of the $189,000,000 Powerball Lottery. The winner lives nearby in Orlando. Exchanged for one dollar at a Chevron gas station, the winning Powerball ticket rested comfortably in the owner's wallet until Saturday, October 10, 2009. For a week, he did not know he held the $189,000,000 winning ticket.

If you have visited Orlando and stayed near the International Drive area, you most likely know the business. The Chevron gas station and mini market shares a cut-through street with Chic-fil-A on Sand Lake Road at the Turkey Lake corner.

Dr. William Steele and wife, Frankie Summers-Steele, live not far from our area. Recognized immediately as the dermatologist recently featured in a Southwest Bulletin Newspaper article, he appeared humble and elated with recent "pot of gold". Choosing to take the cash, Dr. Steele accepted the $100,000,000 upfront Powerball payment. Uncle Sam will collect a share, and Doc says will share with charities.

This is the first time since Florida joined the Powerball Lottery that someone from our state won. Our family purchases one ticket for each drawing, such big spenders. From time to time, we have three numbers and collect our $3.00-$4.00 bounty. No winners for us this time, but it is amazing how exciteing to hear a "home boy" won.

The Chevron is crowded, and people are coming from all around to purchase Powerball tickets. Most believe Chevron is a "lucky store". The owner received an $80,000 gift from the Powerball Lottery, given to business owners who sell the winning Powerball ticket. Over $21,000,000 will go to support education, and during this period of economic crisis, we welcome the extra dollars.

This perks up our community, and everyone is asking, "Do you know them?" No one knows what the future will hold for any of us. Our small area of Orlando is probably 95% tourist related business. The other five percent go to work each day, pay bills, grocery shop, and complain about this hot October. We wish Dr. Steele and family the best.

LOL. It's good someone from FL won. I figured the ticket was purchased here and the owner lived in another state. That's usually the way it works in that area. LOL

I can't imagine buying a ticket and then not even checking the numbers. I find that hard to believe. He probably knew, but waited the week to get his financial advisers lined up (which is the smart thing to do).
