Powerful Earthquake in Japan Raises Concerns

Fran Brockmyre
In yet another forceful display of Mother Nature, Japan was hit by a massive earthquake that has given rise to a dangerous tsunami. There have been many deaths reported. This tsunami poses a dangerous threat to many countries, including New Zealand. New Zealand is recovering from its own earthquake of February, 2011.

According to the website, Wikipedia, Japan and New Zealand are both located within the Pacific Ring of Fire. This is an extremely active fault, in fact, the most active. A fault is defined, very basically, as a rock fracture. Earthquakes are caused by the energy released by an active fault. The Pacific Ring of Fire is not only associated with earthquakes but also volcanic activity. You can view the horseshoe shaped area that this fault covers here. The majority of earthquakes occur along this fault. According to Wikipedia, it is also where 75% of the world's volcanoes are located.

As I look at the map of the Pacific Ring of Fire, I notice that the horseshoe shape extends towards Alaska and on down along the west coast of the United State. These areas have been put on alert with respect to the tsunami. I find it a little disconcerting as I notice the progression of the occurrences of these recent earthquakes. It makes me appreciate even more the stress that the people of New Zealand are experiencing.

I'm reading this a day late, and since you wrote this the tsunami hit California, but less deadly results than the part hitting Japan.

I've heard reports that this was the 5th most powerful earthquake in recorded history, and the strongest ever to hit Japan. The devastation there is unbelievable. I trust that the entire world will come to Japan's aid in the days to come.
