Powhatan County Considers Broadening Distance-learning Opportunities

Higher Education Creates Business-friendly Environment

Powhatan County's economic-development authority met with the Virginia Economic Development Partnership to consider growth opportunities in distance education and target those that will positively impact the county. With a population of 26,000 and its proximity to Richmond, VA, Powhatan County is ripe for economic development if the county can develop the right business and education-friendly environment.

Richmond continues to need skilled workers in technology and engineering fields. Powhatan will benefit if higher education prospects increase in the county to feed the area's requirement for IT workers. A partnership between community colleges and universities built upon a distance-learning platform will enhance the county's attempts to grow economic development, according to Liz Povar, director of business development for the Virginia Economic Development Partnership.

Creating a consortium of higher education vendors will attract businesses requiring skilled and talented workers. Distance-learning is an excellent vehicle to provide university access to Powhatan's population at a low cost to both colleges and students. Classes can be held in local facilities using video projection or at the learners' homes through internet access.

Powhatan County should certainly consider moving forward with creating a distance-education partnership as part of an overall message that Powhatan has a vision for economic growth and opportunity. This action will benefit not only Powhatan County, but also greater Richmond's economic development.
